[current music: iron & wine- each coming night]

i'm in the office today, trying to finish up a JDS map for tuesday. dave d is coming down from portland on monday to meet with me & so there probably won't be any time for map projects then. it should be good to meet with him, try to plan for future long-term projects.

there's stormy weather on the coast today (sorry, no pictures). but here's a report from the weather underground to give you an idea of what it's like:

    >03/26/2005 0210 PM
    >5 miles NNE of Depoe Bay, Lincoln County.
    >Non-thunderstorm wind gust 65 mph, reported by trained spotter.
    > Toppled a 30 ft tree

i ran into fred & sandy at the library & they invited me over for easter dinner tomorrow. time is passing by so quickly that i didn't even notice that it was easter, almost april.

i finished reading a collection of novellas by andrea barrett entitled servants of the map this afternoon. in addition to this book, i've read 2 others so far this year: things fall apart by chinua achebe and the end of the story by lydia davis. all three are highly recommended.

many thoughts recently about the idea of personal history:
-how it is shaped through the act of remembering; how the interpretation of memories in the present shape our understanding of the past (our personal history); how our memories are often imprecise and thus are, in many ways, fiction; how each and every present moment carries within it each and every previous moment.
-how personal history interacts with communal history, worldwide events, shifts in thinking, cultural upheavals
-how the scale of history itself is mutable, ever shifting, with perspective

okay, i should get back to the mapmaking....

[current music: hum of the computer]

it's a bit late here and i should be sleeping soon (ok, it's only 10:07p but that's late for me) & so this is a short recap of my latest roadtrip west.

    the route:
midland -> chicago (visiting hitesh & janet) -> iowa city (good time at the dublin underground) -> grand island, NE -> fort collins, CO (visiting ashley & ram) -> twin falls, ID -> lincoln city -> portland -> lincoln city

gina & i made it to lincoln city late last thursday (3/17). we had nice weather for about half a day on friday and hiked cascade head (my favorite oregon coast hike!). dinner at the blackfish & then we watched hotel rwanda (a powerful movie... highly recommended) at the bijou. on saturday, the sky split open and pour out rain rain rain and wind gusts up to 60 mph. such troopers we were, driving up the coast highway, stopping at cape kiwanda & in oceanside (for the best penne pasta ever at roseanna's cafe) before meeting up with anne & fran in portland. gina flew back to the ORD on sunday and i drove back to lincoln city.

& now life is beginning anew for me.

i'm back at work but it's taking a bit longer than i'd like to get rolling (hold ups & miscommunications between this office and the regional folks). feels good to be back though. this evening, after work, i headed down to nye beach to catch the sunset. so many people were on the beach-- it's spring break throughout oregon.

[current music: mazzy star- fade into you -> halah (11/12/94)]

    howdy all,
i'll be starting my trip out to oregon this upcoming saturday (3/12). going through chicago, iowa city (to pick up g), fort collins & then a straight shot (or as straight as possible) to the coast (see map below & follow the green line west!).

    map
go west, young man, originally uploaded by abhayadana.

since i've never driven this route in the winter, i don't really know what to expect as far as driving conditions, the winter landscape, etc. i'll take lots of pictures :)

-in the last photo, dennis is doing a "spiro smile" (ask D)
-joe is holding a certificate showing his monster 46,000 skin cartenoid score. (wow!) i got a comparatively puny 36,000.
