instead of trying to fill y'all in on what's been going on here in the past 3 months or so, i just put together a slideshow (hover over the right hand corner for picture descriptions):

anyway, so today...
franz & ryan are passing through on their way to northern cali. this must be the year for reconnecting with old friends. i hadn't seen them in some 6 years. & just on friday, while i was perusing the latest issue of wetlands, i found an article that peach wrote with joy zedler. & the counselor emailed with news of sarah jane's wedding (& bun in the oven). & i got an email from peteB, who's in australya now. & the serendipitous meeting with ian in philly at the belle & sebastian show, which i attended with hc. & seeing christianne & rae up in spokane. & visiting joe in san fran. & this, the year of my 10 year CCHS class reunion (which i missed but has spurred some folks to start emailing again). & so on & so on.

i am always amazed at the amount and timing of convergence in my life. & it is almost as though family and friends, no matter how scattered around the world they may be, seem to appear and re-appear with the kind of constancy that never fails to reminds me of how and why we were so connected in the first place.

sort of apropos of nothing, here's a quote from a short story by stuart dybek entitled 'paper lantern':

"I had this sudden awareness," she continues, "of how the moments of our lives go out of existence before we're conscious of having lived them. It's only relatively few moments that we get to keep and carry with us for the rest of our lives. Those moments are our lives. Or maybe it's more like those moments are the dots and what we call our lives are the lines we draw between them, connecting them into imaginary pictures of ourselves. You know?"

i started tutoring a new girl this past week in reading. i've committed myself to 20 hours of tutoring within about 2 weeks, which is quite a bit actually. anyway, we're meeting in about 4 hours so i've got to prep. our last meeting, i assigned swamp nurse for her to read.

also, several posts ago, i linked to the random garfield comic generator, which has since been taken down. well, in the same vein, some folks discovered that if you remove garfield's thought/speech balloons, the comic becomes oddly surreal. in one forum poster's words, "now its just a sad man talking to his fat cat."
