[current music: andrew bird- tables and chairs]
i'm home in midland now, typing away from my bed (where the majority of my thesis was written!). i stayed in portland with anne & fran on wednesday night, flew out thursday to MKE and drove home today with niks. tomorrow, we'll be heading over to virginia to visit my dad's side of the family until the 28th.
anyway, just thought that i'd do some catchin' up.... so, here are some highlights since my last update:
12/3-12/4: the pushpin art show + the best penne pasta EVER! the opening of the 15th annual pushpin art show at the visual arts center was on saturday. the idea behind the show was to encourage artists of all ages & levels of experience to exhibit their work. the only criterion was that the artwork must be able to hang on the wall with just 4 pushpins. rachel submitted an embroidered & beaded card; adam submitted a photograph; ram submitted a painting; and i submitted a book containing a poem i wrote in memory of robert creeley, who passed away this past spring.
[i'm not sure how many of you are familiar with my connection with robert creeley but when i was in high school, he gave a reading at the university of charleston and i attended. after his reading, i sought him out (which really was a big deal b/c i was painfully shy then) & we talked for awhile about poetry and about my being an aspiring young poet. at the end of our conversation, he found a green cocktail napkin and wrote out his email address at SUNYAB and told me to write. since that moment, i've always felt a particular affinity towards him and his poetry.]
anyway, the opening was lots of fun as d&d, ric & linda, and others all attended too. i had some folks come up to me with questions about the book, which was interesting. for no other reason than because i thought that the numbers sounded good, i priced the book at $2.34. someone actually decided to buy the book; however, since they didn't have the change, they just paid $5 for it. so there you go: i've now officially sold some artwork. on sunday, rach, adam & i drove up to oceanside for the best penne pasta EVER at roseanna's cafe. on our way up, we stopped at cape kiwanda for a while & the light was brilliant. here are some pics from the weekend:12/9: rachel, adam & i drove out to eugene to catch nickel creek at the mcdonald theater. the opener was andrew bird. rach & adam, if you're reading this, you won't believe how much i've grown to enjoy him. in contrast to his live show, where he was trying to juggle the fiddle, glockenspiel, guitar, sampling pedals, singing and whistling & not always succeeding, his albums are really quite balanced and beautifully arranged. all of the whimsy, theatricality, and whistling that just seemed to be strange and annoying in his live show somehow came together really well on his albums. the mysterious production of eggs has become one of my favorite releases this year. nickel creek's set was excellent. i wasn't familiar with many of the songs but definitely appreciated the musicianship of the group, especially chris thile who's just a monster on the mandolin. they did a cover of britney's 'toxic' that was extremely fun. aside from 'toxic' and the instrumental bluegrass-y jams (e.g., 'stumptown'), the song i most enjoyed was 'why should the fire die?' (especially the harmonizing) from their latest album.
12/10-12/11: a going away party for rachel, adam & agnes / holiday parties wow, the going away party at d&d's was a doozy. anne & francis were on the coast for a visit & they brought 2 guitars, 2 djembes, a charango, a mic & amp & some shakers. doug had his guitar & i brought my tabla, flute & laptop. we had a pretty good jam going. hey, good music + good food + good friends (+ lots of eggnog, grand marnier & beer).... it was probably one of the best parties i had been to in years! & the next morning, adam & rach, being the superstars that they are, made us all apple puff pancakes! some pictures (ask anne & francis about the videos....):12/12: RIP the cyst named agnes
12/16-12/17: farewell to rach & adamokay, so i can't really update the blog without a mention of the de-luxe chicken palace aka lucky cluck farms. ram has finished painting ruthie (sissy) and chickie mama on the front of the coop. here's a picture of him in action (you'll have to wait for the next edition of the coop scoop for a picture of the finished coop!):hey, speaking of the coop scoop, i uploaded PDFs of the spring '05, summer '05, and fall '05 coop scoops. dawn diggedy did a great job with them so check it out!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
