ok, unfortunately no pictures in this post. i wish that i had taken a camera to the iron & wine/calexico show though. it was amazing! one of the best concerts i've seen. (#1 still remains the mogwai show last year at the roseland)

so, what was so cool about the show???

-m ward (!) being so loose & playing a mini set with calexico & sam beam AND then playing along during the iron & wine/calexico set
-'fuel for fire' with a full arrangement including slide guitar & harmonies by sam beam & joey burns
-james mercer of the shins performing 2 songs (including 'a new slang') acoustically with harmonies from sam beam
-janet weiss of sleater-kinney singing harmonies on a calexico song & then playing percussion
-the 'anything goes' dynamic between the musicians. francis counted 11 people on stage at one point, all doing their own thing & sounding sooo good.
-the musical saw
-the horns section of calexico
-covers of the velvet underground ('all tomorrow's parties'), the rolling stones ('wild horses'), and willie nelson ('you were always on my mind')
-an arrangement of iron & wine's 'jezebel' with drums!
-a rocking 'teeth in the grass'
-sam beam's harmonies with his sister, sarah
-the fact that the concert lasted from 9pm-12:45pm

a couple tiny nitpicky things though:
-i wished that the sound system at the roseland was better. the sound was a little too muddy for me. & they had problems with feedback during 1 or 2 of sam's songs.
-that the drums in 'on your wings' came on at the same time as during the album version
-no 'passing afternoon' or 'upward over the mountain'

so i did drive to portland for the concert last night after finishing up GPS work at millport slough. francis, bill (anne's brother in law), lance (bill's brother in law), & i attended the show together. i also ran into dan craver from the FWS, which was cool. after the show, fran, bill & i stayed up to chat for a bit while listening to the bootleg that francis recorded on his minidisc. in all, a good but long night. & then i returned to newport this morning in order to tutor this afternoon. as a result i'm a bit knackered. ah yes, so it's naptime....

   Look at you Mister Man! Awesome! I am so envious of the great things you are doing! You've worked very hard and long for your successes. Just wanted to see how things were going and it looks good! You look REALLY young. New haircut? Keep the youth!
