sunday morning. cloudy, warm, and small puddles from overnight showers outside. i've got rice cooking and laundry going downstairs. this afternoon, i'll be heading up north to the olympic peninsula & then to the san juan islands for the summer surveys. this year, i'll mostly be working on vegetation mapping but i'll help pam out with some of the seabird & marine mammal counts too. lots to do before leaving town but i decided, as my final act of procrastination, to write this past due update.

in my last entry, i promised some stories & pictures from the kalmiopsis wilderness trip that amanda, ingrid & i took over memorial day weekend (+ a couple of days). well, it was an excellent trip though not without it's share of (typical) misadventures: poorly marked trails, wrong turns, negative mileage after the first day, a non-working stove which necessitated 2 back&forth trips to the cars, fighting through massive blowdown areas, a couple of river crossings.... by the end of saturday, we were only about 16 miles into the 54 mile loop. i had to be in Portland early on Tuesday morning for a meeting so i decided to turn around on Sunday morning & hike back to the Bean & return to the coast while amanda & ingrid continued on the trail. as it turned out, we all had pretty exhausting sundays since we had steep climbs in hot weather to get through. i finally got off the trail early on Monday morning while a&i finished the loop Tuesday evening. but it really was interesting down there -- most of the wilderness IS burned but there are lots of pockets the fire didn't touch. & plenty of blooming azalea, beargrass, fireweed, lupine, kalmiopsis & a bunch of other plants we couldn't identify.

hm. so what else has been going on here? lots of randomness, i guess. halibut fishing with jim, roy & jason, a CD listening party at eli's, bhangra/afrotech/arabica/baile funk/reggaeton in SE PDX, an annoucement dinner, egg angels, contra dancing in newport with the nettles, chris thile & the how to grow a band at the wonder ballroom, PUDPAC planning, leading an invasives mapping training in bandon, the oregon country fair yesterday....

yes, so i've got much to do before leaving here. food to make, laundry to finish, clothing/gear to pack. i've got to stop by the office to make sure that i've got all my data, datasheets, GPS units, laptop, etc. so i best get going now.

   Hello Khemmie!!! I hope you got my card/postcard with the picture! Like I said in the note, I forgot all about the picture, so it was a very nice surprise! Classes just started for me and I sit wondering how you did your Master's degree, especially kicking ass with it! Damn!!! I like both the professors, but my Research/Stats class is going to kill! Big Hugs & Kisses to you! Say "hello" to the new honey and I hope to meet with her someday! I hope it's when I move back to the Northwest! But it will probably need to be before that because I still have about 3 years with the extra classes! FUN TIMES!!! Hugs!
