ok, so the title of this post comes from a movie. if anyone can name the movie and the context, i'll send you a chocolate bar. no crappy chocolate here either. i'm talking about endangered species chocolate. mm hmm. how does 'the sea turtle bar' or maybe even 'the bat bar' sound to you? mmm... dark choco-late.
over MLK Day weekend, a bunch of us coastal/valley folks headed up to PDX for a taste of the BIG CITY LIFE. d&d and leilani attended a hockey game with the foleys. laura & kevin were up for the oldtime gathering. i picked up dacey in corvallis then met with anne & francis at the red & black cafe to catch "crazy" dave wong's portland gig in support of his 'rosa maria' EP. i took some pictures:after the show (& hockey game, oldtime gathering, etc.) we all congregated at anne & fran's for a serious hoe-down. & i'm not kidding either... it WAS a hoe-down. i mean, even tammy-tonya and her twin, krystal, showed up.
ayesh. it's late here. this week, i'll be at willapa, doing some mapping for them. so i should be getting to bed soon. i was going to post more pics from PDX but oh well. if you're really interested in seeing/downloading more, you can go here.
anyway, another objective of the portland trip was to pick up some free futons that i found through craigslist. mission accomplished. i don't actually need 2 futons (imagine that!) so anne & francis took one and put it in their guest room, i think. well, i've been working on making my apartment more home-y. i suppose that furniture helps. & i suppose that weight benches & wooden cubes & floor pillows hardly count. here are some of the results (what do you think, maman?):the bed is leilani's. the coffee table is from anne & francis. the mola hanging on the wall is made by some kuni in panama (obtained by way of ebay).
some geekiness follows. you may skip if not interested....
ok, so one of my projects lately has been to upgrade the $100 MSI MS-6215 i bought. i finally got around to it. bought a 250GB hard drive & DVD-RW drive from fry's (hefty rebates), a silenx 60mm fan from voyeurmods, & a 256MB PC133 SDRAM chip & a 108 mbps wireless PCI card from newegg. installed a dual boot winxp/pclinuxos system. (i like pclinuxos, by the way. my only other experiences with linux have been with red hat. this is much much nicer & easier to install & configure.) i'm using the computer as a media center now. it's even got an IR port for remote use. here's my pclinuxos screenshot:in other geek-related news, i did a major revision of the oregon coast national wildlife refuge complex web page fairly recently. everything is being switched over to css (made good use of the suckerfish dropdowns). the news and events pages use cold fusion. there are some php scripts being used with the images. i'm particularly happy with how the news, events, and brochure slideshow pages turned out (check out the index map in the brochure... matt h & i did a good job with it, i think). haven't gotten around to really updating the education, wildlife, faq, links, & volunteer pages yet though. but it's difficult to make time to do the updates during work since it's collateral duty & not the main focus of my job. so, you know, it becomes sort of a leisure activity done in spare time.
as per hc's suggestion, these are my Top Five ways to waste time (as always, please feel free to post a comment with your list):
1. daydream (e.g., the coffee house idea)
2. look at random livejournal images and follow the links until they get boring (hey, liesel, you remember doing this with me?)
3. try to find new (to me) music from sites like the live music archive and largehearted boy. i suppose that surfing sites like pitchfork, pop matters, stylus, and tiny mix tapes for reviews also can be included in this category.
4. organize my music (CDs, files, etc.)-- it's sort of like in high fidelity
5. go to the Garfield Randomizer and make comics like this:

oh kj, i remember when we were talking about this. and i wanted to write my list back then. guess that was more than a year and a half ago, huh? i am a king at wasting time (but i know i'm not alone)! writing this list has always been on my to-do list...and now is as good a time as any to work on that list by working on this list. so here goes.

almost 1am here so there won't be much length to this entry, i'm afraid. i did want to post some pictures from the holidays though.

1. mogwai- 2 rights make 1 wrong
the perfect song, really. a nice build culminating in a brief but cathartic rush followed by drifting ambience. brilliant.
a dream: riding a bicycle through the narrow streets of an old city & then into the countryside & finally reaching the ocean
2. iron & wine- the trapeze swinger
the lyrics are laced with beautiful & baffling imagery
a dream: watching a mime juggle imaginary elephants while sharing cotton candy with your childhood best friend
3. dirty three- backwards voyager
warren ellis' wistful/mournful violin, jim white's soft, erratic brushstroke drumming, mick turner's dream color guitar
dream: riding a train from france to spain & trying to remember the scenery so that it could be reconstructed later but then forgetting the details. the mountains are just mountains, the sea just the sea.

I look like Waldo from Where's Waldo in the family photo. Anyway, I hope that you're doing well. I've been working on inventing some of my own recipes during break from school. Nav even prepared the family a tuna casserole a few days ago. I hope that you've been sharpening your culinary skills for your cookbook contribution!

here are a few i listen to before drifting off...three are pure instrumentals, for peace.
1. REM--New Orleans Instrumental No. 1 (i used to listen to this pretty much every night when i was in germany that summer. it helped me get over the homesickness.)
2. Ry Cooder & V.M. Bhatt--Isa Lei (kj, i have to say that this is also the perfect piece! really. just. perfect.)
3. Mazzy Star--Blue Light (or most ANYthing Mazzy/Hope. i know you knew this would be on my list, kj!)
4. Her Space Holiday--Something Old (another happy, dreamy instrumental.)
