[current music: iron & wine- the trapeze swinger]
so, it's another year begun....
almost 1am here so there won't be much length to this entry, i'm afraid. i did want to post some pictures from the holidays though.
at home & in virginia:new year's pics from the new checkerboard lounge, evan's sublet & janet's place in chicago:anne & fran picked me up from PDX & decided to get spacey:oh, i thought that i'd try something new here at the end. everyone i know seems to love making lists in their head -- lists of things to do, groceries to buy, favorite movies, etc. hc & i were talking about lists while i was driving from PDX & i told him that i'd try to stick a list at the bottom of each blog entry i write, thinking that maybe this'll encourage folks to comment, contribute (or at least, i can count on hc, right?). so here goes.... the first list of 2006 is:
(thinking about ZZZzz...)
TOP 5 songs to have playing while drifting off to sleep (for the benefit of good dreaming) 1. mogwai- 2 rights make 1 wrong the perfect song, really. a nice build culminating in a brief but cathartic rush followed by drifting ambience. brilliant. a dream: riding a bicycle through the narrow streets of an old city & then into the countryside & finally reaching the ocean
2. iron & wine- the trapeze swinger the lyrics are laced with beautiful & baffling imagery a dream: watching a mime juggle imaginary elephants while sharing cotton candy with your childhood best friend
3. dirty three- backwards voyager warren ellis' wistful/mournful violin, jim white's soft, erratic brushstroke drumming, mick turner's dream color guitar dream: riding a train from france to spain & trying to remember the scenery so that it could be reconstructed later but then forgetting the details. the mountains are just mountains, the sea just the sea.
4. squarepusher- iambic 5 poetry i dunno. i just like this song. dream: ???
5. debussy- clair de lune i read terrence mcnally's play 'frankie & johnny in the clair de lune' during high school and loved its simplicity & honesty. the song played in my head before sleep for months afterwards a dream: sitting on a bench in central park, watching fireflies flicker their lights off & on

I look like Waldo from Where's Waldo in the family photo. Anyway, I hope that you're doing well. I've been working on inventing some of my own recipes during break from school. Nav even prepared the family a tuna casserole a few days ago. I hope that you've been sharpening your culinary skills for your cookbook contribution!
so happy to see you're still sporting the bird sweatshirt! (and i liked seeing lisa in your favorite hat too!) khemie, i don't think i know any of the songs you listed...this is not good. you are my music teacher, we not to get back on task, eh? I don't think i can listen to anythign while trying to fall asleep. so i'll list top five best songs to dance to in the morning to help wake up: 1. Buena Vista Social Club (#1) 2. Modest Mouse, Float on 3. Wada No Tad, (Eternal Sunshine soundtrack) 4. Obsesion, that song Shruthi gave me that we danced to over and over again in her room at owen. 5. Sly and the Family Stone, If you want me to stay...of course!
hey kj, great first list! i have to hear some of the ones you chose. beautiful.
here are a few i listen to before drifting off...three are pure instrumentals, for peace.
1. REM--New Orleans Instrumental No. 1 (i used to listen to this pretty much every night when i was in germany that summer. it helped me get over the homesickness.)
2. Ry Cooder & V.M. Bhatt--Isa Lei (kj, i have to say that this is also the perfect piece! really. just. perfect.)
3. Mazzy Star--Blue Light (or most ANYthing Mazzy/Hope. i know you knew this would be on my list, kj!)
4. Her Space Holiday--Something Old (another happy, dreamy instrumental.)
5. The Flaming Lips--Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (the entire album, especially when i'm hoping for trippy dreams in which i battle pink robots on a distant asteroid.)
looking forward to the next one, man! til then...
liesel (aka waldo)- nope, not working on any new recipes.... e.g., today, i ate a clif bar, pb&j and for dinner: burrito goodness. oh and for dessert, i had a nutty bar. yum! ok, well not-so-yum. send me a recipe & i'll test it out too.
in honor of messy, here's a Top Five list of songs i listen to in the morning: 1. arcade fire- wake up 2. beck- golden age (it's for slow waking) 3. lucinda williams- drunken angel (i don't know why but i've had it playing in my head ever since the sunday morning at anne & fran's, post-party.) 4. dirty three- to aster! 5. mogwai- new paths to helicon, part 1
HC, i'm going to have to get a copy of the meeting by the river....
