today: went to the farmer's market this morning & met up with dawn, ashley & ram. rebecca & her family were also there. i've realized that farmer's markets are really as much about socializing as they are about food & crafts. i bought some organic brandywine tomatoes, broccoli, salad mix & fresh goat cheese. yum. afterwards, dawn & i took aspen for a walk along cooper's ridge. dacey will be over this evening and i think that we might make salad rolls.

last weekend, i housesat for dawn & doug while they were down in bandon for the shorebird festival. raenell was coming up from cali on her way back to spokane & stopped by for a couple of days while i was still housesitting. here are some pictures from housesitting & rae's visit:

i finished reading anil's ghost by michael ondaatje on thursday. it's taken some time for me to process what i've read but over time, i've been appreciating the book more & more. the aspects that are most interesting to me involve the sri lankan civil war and the roles/interactions of the three main characters, anil, sarath and gamini, with the violence and victims of war. however, even as the novel takes place during the war, with kidnappings and assasinations and mass bombings commonplace, i felt as though there was an even greater thematic emphasis upon the meanings/relevance of history (i.e., the remembering, recording, reimagining, and interpretation of fragmented personal and cultural pasts). the events of the past saturate all of the actions in the novel. the questions that afflict the characters then become essentially moral -- knowing what we know or what we think we know, how do we choose to react to the chaos of violence and ambiguity of culpability around us?

   I like the website Khemmie! I really loved getting to hang with you and hope that we can do more. I am doing orientation and leading the future class of 2009. Ha Ha Ha!
